The Boston marathon

The Boston Marathon is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious annual marathons. It was first held on April 19, 1897, inspired by the marathon at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens. John Graham, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) member, initiated the race. The course is known for its challenging route, and the most famous incline is “Heartbreak Hill” near Boston College, around mile 20.

The Marathon is also famous thanks to Kathrine Virginia Switzer who was an American marathon runner, author, and television commentator. In the year 1967 she became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as an officially registered competitor.
